The world expects Oakley to be the pioneer of sport innovation. For good reason. We seek to revolutionize the sport of surfing by creating a protection system that allows athletes to push their performance while protecting them when conditions get serious. Until now, pro surfers have been turned off by helmets due to underwhelming and underperforming options, making surf helmets fall under the “kook” category. We set an ambitious goal of not only making a helmet that offers un-matched protection, but also one that pro surfers are excited to wear — and we’ve done just that by partnering with key athletes to solve problems across protection, fit, user experience and design. Our new surf helmet balances function, protection, senses and emotion to equip athletes to perform at their best in some of the most challenging environments known to man. We’re on a journey to create history, empower a growing movement, and design the future of surfing.

To make an innovative and meaningful product, our UX team conducted countless workshops, interviews, and field tests with the best surfers in the world. This allowed us to leverage athletes insights, gain a deep understanding of their needs, and design a new protective system that empowers them to perform at their best. We are human driven at heart. The collaborative journey with Oakley athletes was integral to the success of this project. This process ensured we showed up authentically in the surf space and validated the need to create a better, if not the best, surf helmet experience available.
WHAT DOES THE NAME WTR ICON MEAN?
WTR is short for “water” and speaks to the environment this product lives in. It also stands for “Water Technology Research” which captures the extensive R&D that took place over the past two years. ICON pays homage to the address of Oakley HQ, 1 Icon Drive, where iconic products are created and designed to ignite human possibility.

HOW MUCH DOES WTR ICON WEIGH? WET VS. DRY?
348g dry, 364g wet (ear protection adds 9 grams). This is the first helmet to feel natural in the water, and allows you to surf like you don’t have a helmet on!
WHAT IS THE SHELL MADE OF?
For increased durability, WTR ICON is made with an ABS shell.
HAS THIS BEEN TESTED FOR WATER ANDCORROSION?
WTR ICON passed environmental testing such as UV testing, saltwater submersion testing, and salt spray testing. These tests helped us check for swelling, delamination of glue and deterioration. No piece of WTR ICON is made of corroding materials.
